Property Description
The Fairmont Dallas opened in 1969 to much local fanfare as Texas's first luxury hotel. At the time of its completion, the hotel was the tallest building in the city. On a clear day, one could see from the hotel's penthouse suite to the town of McKinney, 20 miles north. Dubbed "the Arts District hotel," The Fairmont Dallas remains at the centre of Dallas's many attractions. The Dallas Museum of Art, Symphony Hall, and Arts District Theatre are all located within three blocks of the hotel. Entertainment is an integral part of the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts tradition. Since its inception, The Fairmont Dallas has hosted every debutante, political and civic event in the city. The Venetian Room (styled after the famous Venetian Room of its sister hotel, The Fairmont San Francisco) has featured a multitude of performing artists, including Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., The Platters, The Drifters and The Supremes.

JFK Historical PlacesJFK Historical Places - Return to November 1963. Dallas pays homage to its darkest time when President John F. Kennedy was killed. Visit the infamous Texas Schoolbook Depository, where the official JFK monument is located in the Sixth Floor Museum. (15 minute walk from hotel, 6 blocks southeast). In the southeast window on the sixth floor of the former Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, an assassin is alleged to have fired the shots that killed President John F. Kennedy and severely wounded Texas Governor John Connally as the presidential motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963. The sixth floor corner window area is currently in a glass enclosed display designed to recreate the so-called "sniper's perch". The actual place where he was shot is about a 5-minute walk from the hotel. For more information: www.jfk.org or call 214-787-6660.

Dinosaur Valley State ParkAbout 110 million years ago, dinosaurs left their footprints in the limestone along the Paluxy River. Of course back then, the river didn't exist, and most of Texas was ocean floor. There are two ways to find these ancient imprints today. You can stop at the park's well-marked viewing sites or hunt for them. We recommend both. After you check out the easy ones, climb down to the river and hike along the edge. Watch carefully; some tracks may be half-covered with silt. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots that can get wet. The easiest tracks to recognize belong to the meat-eating, three-toed acrocanthosaurus, a cousin to Tyrannosaurus-Rex. You may also discover large round tracks of the pleurocoelus, a plant-eating creature resembling the brontosaurus with its long neck and pillar like legs. Aside from tracks, the 1,523-acre park has much to offer. There are hiking, biking and equestrian trails, picnic benches, campsites, a playground and a swimming hole. The last is a good spot to see more tracks, look along the rocky edges. Located 75 miles or about a 2-hour drive from the Fairmont Dallas. For more information: (254) 897-4588 or visit www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/dinosaur
Forth Worth ZooExhibits include meerkats, Komodo dragons, Flamingo Bay, Raptor Canyon and a walk-through birds-of-prey aviary. The Koala Outback exhibit features several yellow-footed rock wallabies and red kangaroos as well as a handful of koalas. There is a 2.5-acre World of Primates natural habitat for great apes and others. Asian Falls with Sumatran tigers and Malayan sun bears in an area with a 40-foot waterfall. Roaming two wooded acres along the creek in the Fort Worth Zoo are American bison, wild turkeys and Mexican wolves populating the new "Thundering Plains'' exhibit. All three once were common in the wilds of North America, and all have come close to extinction. These days, no Mexican wolves exist in the wild, and only 200 are in captivity. Bison, once 60 million strong, had been reduced to 1,500 by the late 1800s. Conservation efforts have helped that number grow to 200,000. Wild turkeys, once forced out of almost half their habitat, have been restored to their native environments in every state except Alaska. The "Thundering Plains" exhibit also includes a Western-themed children's area with turn-of-the-century covered wagons surrounding a campfire. The zoo also features Texas Discovery, an interactive live animal presentation where visitors can learn about animals that once thrived in the Lone Star State. One of the zoo's newest inhabitants is Bluebonnet, nicknamed Bonnie, a long-awaited 259-pound bouncing baby elephant. When she arrived on Dec. 16, 1998, she became the first elephant born at the 90-year-old Fort Worth Zoo and one of only five born in U.S. zoos in 1998.
